Title: The Best Detergent for More DNA Extraction
    Subject: Biochemistry
Grade level: High School - Grades 10-12
    Academic Level: Ordinary
    Project Type: Experimental
    Cost: Low
Awards: First Place, Canada Wide Virtual Science Fair (2006)
Affiliation: Canada Wide Virtual Science Fair
Description: The experiment was performed in order to compare the efficiency of three different household detergents during a DNA extraction process from a sample of kiwi cells. The method includes disruption of the cell membrane, liberation of the DNA, and precipitation of the DNA. By finding a cheap, yet efficient, way of extracting DNA strands we can reduce the costs related to buying expensive chemicals by schools that perform this experiment for education purposes.
