Title: The production of Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) in plants and bacteria
Subject: Renewable Energy
Grade level: High School - Grades 10-12
Academic Level: Advanced
Project Type: Experimental
Cost: Mrdium
Awards: 2nd place, Canada Wide Virtual Science Fair ($100)
Affiliation: Canada Wide Virtual Science Fair (VSF)
Year: 2010
Description: Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) is an enzyme able to degrade lignocellulose (lignocellulosic biomass). CDH is produced naturally by some fungi; however, it is very difficult to produce CDH on a large scale because CDH-producing fungi also secrete proteases that break down CDH. This project focused on the production of CDH in transgenic plants as well as in bacteria by using biotechnology methods.
