Project Information
Title: A Study Into Making and Using Carbon-Coated Sea Shells for the Filtration of Lead-Contaminated Water
Subject: Environmental Sciences
Subcategory: Water Purification
Grade level: Middle School - Grades 7-9
Academic Level: Ordinary
Project Type: Engineering
Cost: High
Awards: Community Impact Award
Affiliation: Google Science Fair
Year: 2016
Materials: Crushed oyster shells, furnace, PVC pipe
Techniques: ICPMS (inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry)
Concepts:
Description: The objective of this project was to find a way to cheaply and easily purify lead-contaminated water. Seashells were tried as a filtering material because they're high in surface area. A homemade seashell filter was tested with some lead contaminated water. Using an ICPMS (inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry) was found that the carbon-coated shells filtered out lead from ~72 ppb to less than 15 ppb (which is below the EPA limit for lead content in water). The filter was able to sustain this safe level of lead content for 35 days.
